Roger Gracie is one of the greatest jiu-jitsu competitors to have ever stepped on a mat. A 10x Black Belt World Champion and a multiple MMA champion, Roger is one the most decorated fighters of the modern era, and a member of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Hall of Fame. Roger Gracie is the founder and head instructor at The Roger Gracie Academy located in London.
In 2005 Roger competed in the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship and won all 8 of his matches both at the super heavyweight and absolute weight classes by submission. In the 2009 Mundials he submitted all of his opponents in the super heavyweight and the absolute weight classes with a choke from the mount.
Roger has not been submitted in competition since he was a blue belt. He is regarded by many BJJ fans as the greatest competitor of all time. Gracie has 10 wins at the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championships as a black belt, with three of those victories in Open Weight competition.
Roger ended his professional MMA career with a record of 8-2, having faced legends such as Kevin Randleman, Anthony Smith, Tim Kennedy and Keith Jardine. He fought in the UFC, Strikeforce and ONE FC organisations – all over the world – before finally hanging up his gloves as the reigning ONE FC Light Heavyweight champion.
Having retired from MMA, Roger accepted one final challenge in sport jiu-jistu during 2017, facing Marcus Buchecha – the most decorated IBJJF black belt in history – for a super fight in their native Brazil. Despite a 10 years absence from competitive jiu-jitsu, Roger submitted Buchecha with a choke from the back, cementing his status as a true great of our sport.
On 14 November 2021, Roger became the first person to be inducted into the ADCC Hall of Fame, owing in part to his two gold medals in the 2005 world championships and his super fight victory in 2007.
